Current Abilities: I am a firm believer in making learning fun and incorporating hands on learning to spark creativity in students. I think one of my strong suits is being able to help kids find learning enjoyable and get them excited for an activity. I am able to thinks of ways to change lesson plans so that they don't only consist of worksheets and drills. I believe that showing a student a new concept in a way that relates to them and their lives so that they can make connections. I feel that because I have such a strong passion for bringing creativity into the classroom that will really help me to reach my goals and meet this standard as a teacher.
Need: why is there a need to develop in this area? I think that a lot of teachers get caught up in taking the easy way out and using work sheets or a lesson plan straight out of the book. Not to say that those things don't have a place at times in the classroom but I think that more effort should be put into making the learning process a fun and exciting one. Students are going to be a lot more likely to get something out of a lesson that they can relate to and they will remember late on down the road. Important concepts are something that need to be engrained in a students mind so if we give them a memorable experience when teaching an important lesson instead of a worksheet, they may end up telling their children about it one day.
Goal: I want to make my classroom have an environment where students feel free to be creative. I also want to facilitate growth in creativity so that those students who don't see that creative spark in themselves will be able to see that everyone has that ability. I think some students just simply need a little guidance and a nudge in the right direction to get their creativity flowing. I want my students to look forward to coming to my classroom and know that we will have some sort of a hands on activity every day to get their minds thinking creatively.
Short term plan: I want to become more acquainted with all the different types of technology that I can use as a resource in my classroom. I would like to become confident in using the smart board because I know that it has endless possible uses in the classroom. I want to show my students that anyone can use technology and that it just takes practice. In order for things to happen I need to learn as much about the different educational technology tools as I can.
Long term plan: what you will do in the next year? I want to keep up with the skills and knowledge I gain in the class so that when I have my own classroom I am able to still know how to use all of the technology. I also want to make sure I am constantly learning new things and not falling behind with new information and resources that have become available. I think it is really important to stay on top of new technology and I need to remember there is always room for more learning.
Assessment: how will you know that you did it? I need to write down the goals I have (short and long term) and by the end of the year I need to check myself and see what I did well and what I could continue to work on and improve. I need to make sure I honestly assess what I succeeded in accomplishing and what I need to reassess for the coming year.
Reflection:
I feel that I definitely have met my short term goals I set for myself in this class. I was able to get an idea of how to use many different technologies in the classroom and not only that but I also was able to explore and practice making actual lesson plans that use these technologies. I feel much more prepared now to enter a classroom that uses technology. I feel as though I now have a good basic knowledge of many of the technologies I will possibly be using in my classroom in the future. I was able to gain more knowledge about these technologies than I ever thought and one of the things I unexpectedly gained from this class is more confident to learn about more technologies that we didn't touch on in this course. I now believe when I am presented with a new technology I have more patience and understanding of how to approach it.
I don't think there is much I would change about my long term goals even now that the class has ended. If anything, I think I am more confident in the goals I have set for myself and I want to achieve them even more. I have learned how important it is to be knowledgeable about the technology we use in our classrooms so that it can serve our students properly. If we don't fully understand how to use these technologies we can't expect to be able to incorporate them into our lessons. I definitely want to commit myself to the idea that when it comes to technology, there is always room for learning and I need to try my best to keep up with new advances.
The knowledge I have gained in the class I feel will benefit me greatly when I have my first position as a teacher. Being able to show my employer that I can use technology in the classroom will definitely put me ahead of many other teachers. Also I feel the drive I have to keep learning about technology is something I have gained from this class and it is something I will be able to use to my advantage when it comes to keeping up with any advances that occur while I am teaching. The main thing I am excited about gaining from this class is feeling more comfortable using the SMARTboard. It is one of the technologies that I have seen the most in classrooms and I am so excited that I now know how to create fun and educational activities for my students to use. Also it is a great tool to get the entire class involved in a discussion and I look forward to watching my students learn and grow using it.
